Conservation in Costa Rica: How the Country Turned the Tide
Costa Rica’s environmental story didn’t begin with a spotless record. But before we get into what was lost, it helps to understand why this small country holds so much life in the first place.
Costa Rica sits at the meeting point of North and South America, a narrow land bridge between two continents and two oceans. When that bridge formed millions of years ago, species moved north and south through it, mixing, adapting, and evolving within an unusually compact landscape. Add tropical heat, abundant rain, mountain ranges, volcanic soils, and dramatic changes in elevation, and you get dry forest, rainforest, cloud forest, wetlands, mangroves, rivers, and coastline all packed into one small country. That ecological density is a large part of why Costa Rica became such an extraordinary outlier, even among other tropical nations.
Though blessed with this ecological head start, Costa Rica’s modern environmental story didn’t begin with a spotless record. During the middle decades of the 20th century, forests were cleared rapidly for the country’s economic growth, including cattle ranching, agriculture, roads, and settlement. At the time, here and across much of the world, cleared land was widely seen as productive land. Forest was something to convert, not something to protect.
By the 1980s, the consequences were impossible to ignore. Forest cover had fallen dramatically, watersheds were under pressure, habitats had fragmented, and Costa Rica was losing the very landscapes that made it so ecologically rich.
So the country changed course. Before it was the “cool” or even the “right” thing to do. Before it had any real economic merit.
Over the decades that followed, Costa Rica expanded national parks, wildlife refuges, conservation areas, and private reserves. It strengthened protections, supported landowners who kept forests standing, and built an economy in which nature itself could create long-term value. The turnaround wasn’t instant, and it wasn’t driven by one policy alone. It was the result of choosing, again and again, to treat forests as part of the nation’s future rather than an obstacle to it.
And now, there’s evidence that the recovery is going deeper than the trees themselves. A recent study on the Nicoya Peninsula found that naturally regenerated forests are beginning to behave much more like mature protected forests rather than former cattle pastures, with birds, insects, amphibians, and other wildlife returning alongside the forest. In other words, Costa Rica hasn’t simply brought back its forest cover; in many places, it has brought back the life that truly makes a forest a forest.

Of course, Costa Rica still needed to grow. Forests had been cleared in the first place partly because agriculture, cattle ranching, roads, and settlement offered a path toward vitally important jobs, exports, and economic development.
